Taking the Leap
A peak in to the scariest thing I’ve done in my life—leaving a stable, corporate job to become a full-time artist.
A little over 2 years ago I left behind the steady paycheck, the Outlook calendar, and the ever-present Zoom meeting… and jumped headfirst into the unknown: full-time art. Spoiler alert: it was terrifying.
There’s this quiet myth that when you “follow your passion,” the universe will rise up to meet you with glowing signs and perfect timing. What it actually felt like was more: “congratulations, here’s a blank canvas and absolutely no instructions—good luck!”
But even with the chaos, the late nights, the self-doubt, and the very real temptation to apply for a ‘normal job’ every third Thursday… I wouldn’t trade it. Choosing this life—messy, unpredictable, deeply creative—has been the most honest thing I’ve ever done.
I paint most days. I teach. I pour my heart into each brushstroke, even when I’m not sure where it's all headed. Some days feel like magic. Some days feel like mild panic. And most days are a mix of both.
The biggest gift has been finding people—collectors, students, and friends—who get it. Who value the slow work of making something by hand. Who show up. Who tell me they see something in a piece I made that they needed in that moment. That makes it worth it.
If you’re standing at the edge of your own leap—whatever it may be—I see you. It’s never easy. But it might just be the beginning of something beautiful.

Creating in the New Year - Tips for Starting A Creative Practice
A new year is for new beginnings.
I don’t particularly love the month of January but I do love the chance for a fresh start and an opportunity to set intentions for the future. Given the fresh calendar and cold weather, it’s also a perfect time to embrace your inner artist, explore new ideas, and revitalize your creative practice. Here are some ways to inspire your creativity as we kick off the year.
Set Intentions, Not Resolutions
Instead of rigid resolutions that often lead to disappointment, consider setting intentions that resonate with your creative aspirations. What do you hope to explore this year? Perhaps you want to experiment with new mediums or focus on a specific theme that inspires you. Write these intentions down and keep them visible as a reminder to nurture your creative spirit throughout the year. Start small, and enjoy the journey.
Create a Dedicated Space
Having a designated creative space can help you cultivate a mindset conducive to artistic expression. Whether it’s a corner of your kitchen or a spare room, make it your own. Fill it with items that inspire you, such as beautiful materials, colors you’re drawn to, and meaningful decor. A dedicated space not only stimulates creativity but also creates a ritual of going to your “studio” to create. I painted in my attic at night for years with poor lighting before I finally moved to my studio space.
Experiment Fearlessly
The new year is an ideal time to shake things up and experiment with your art. Let go of the fear of failure and embrace the process of creation. Try different techniques, explore unfamiliar subjects, or combine styles you’ve never thought to merge. Remember, every artist was once a beginner, and every mistake can lead to unexpected discoveries.
Seek Inspiration from Nature
As an artist that draws inspiration from the landscapes and florals of the Carolina coast and mountains, there is immense beauty to be found in the natural world around you. Make it a point to spend time outdoors, whether through walks in the park or hikes in the mountains. Observe the colors, textures, and light that change with each season. Let nature inspire your work and infuse your creativity with its calming essence.
Connect with Community
Creating can sometimes feel solitary, but it doesn’t have to be. This year, seek out communities of artists and like-minded individuals. Join local artist groups, attend workshops, or engage in online forums. Sharing your work and receiving feedback can be incredibly motivating. Additionally, supporting each other’s creative journeys fosters a sense of belonging and encouragement. It helps push us through those bad days. If you are craving a creative community, consider joining one of my workshops! It’s a fun and encouraging environment which we can all use more of.
Reflect and Repeat
At the end of each month, take some time to reflect on what you’ve created. Notice what inspired you, the challenges you faced, and the moments of joy. This reflection will not only help you stay connected to your intentions but also provide insights into your evolving voice as an artist. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and use them to propel you into the next month with renewed energy. Don’t get discouraged…when in doubt, just paint over it! ;)
