Statement
Art and being in nature has brought me peace for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent hours sketching and mixing colors and my interests deepened at a summer camp at a local college. That was where I first discovered the language of light, color, and expressive mark-making. I was taught technique but wasn’t graded or inhibited like at school.
My beloved aunt, an artist and textile designer, was another powerful influence but, unlike her, I never had the nerve to apply to art school and went the business/corporate route instead. Three kids, a full-time job, and one pandemic later, I turned to painting once again to calm my mind. I took workshops w/ artists I admire and painted daily (often early in the AM or late at night), and slowly discovered my creative voice. Oil painting has become my favorite retreat and I love that there is always more to learn, and an opportunity to grow.
Today, I work in an impressionist, painterly style rooted in color harmony, movement, and the beauty of small moments. Painting has always centered me, and I hope each piece offers that same feeling of calm and light to others.
About
Megan Spillars is a Raleigh, North Carolina-based oil painter whose work capture the calm of nature and the quiet moments of everyday life. Drawing inspiration from changing skies, atmospheric light, and the innocence of childhood, her paintings invite viewers to pause and find peace.
Her artistic journey has evolved through years of study and experimentation in plein air and in her home studio. Megan lives in Raleigh with her husband and three children, and finds daily inspiration in the simple, ordinary moments that life offers.
“My paintings are deeply shaped by the movement of light across the landscape. I study how shadows stretch, how reflections shift, and how colors transform at different times of day. Light is my guide…it tells me where to add texture, when to soften a brushstroke, and how to bring atmosphere and emotion on to the canvas.”
